How to Design with SEO in Mind

July 6, 2017

Congrats you just got a big contract to design a website. You have drawn up your wireframes, done user experience research and have created graphics to enhance the website. Looks like you’re ready to start coding the website. What if I told you that you just skipped a major step that has become increasingly important in the digital world.

This, of course, is designing with SEO in mind. This is not as simple as getting a copywriter and telling him/her to add the keyword(s) in as many places as possible, your page needs to be designed in such a way to give yourself as high a chance as possible to appear on Google. Here are five things you can do to ensure a better ranking on Google.

Make room for copy

Some recommend having up to 2000 words of copy on your page. Though it may be hard for you to fit that much copy without ruining the look of your website it is important to at least have enough copy to comfortably fit all your keywords. You do not want to oversaturate your content with keywords this can appear spammy, which will not only read badly but also can hurt your Google ranking.

Image Optimization

Optimize your images

A picture speaks 1000 words and having engaging effective images is crucial to web design, images can also help build relevance with search engines. There are two things to always remember when adding pictures the first is formatting; all images should have a keyword relevant file name, alt text, title, description, and caption. The other important thing to remember is file size, Google uses page speed as a factor when determining page rank.

Stay on top of NAP (name, address, phone number)

I’m sure we have all googled “best burger in Toronto” or something similar I know I do frequently. In order to show up locally (in google maps for example) it is important to always write your NAP in the same format. This means all across your website and on external websites your business’s name, address, and phone number should always be written the same.

Create a sitemap

A site map basically helps Google to read your site. There are quite easy to make and a quick Google search will help you find a generator to make one for you. Then you can use Google’s webmaster tools to link your sitemap. This is a quick and easy way to improve SEO that many miss out on.

Insite backlinking

Backlinking is very important in working with SEO, never underestimate the effect of backlinking within your own site. If you have a blog make sure to work in some links back to your main site. This will not only help users find content but can improve SEO as well.
